First Nations Development Institute: GATHER

GATHER, winner of the James Beard award for Documentary/Docuseries Visual Media, is an intimate portrait of the growing movement amongst Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide. The movie follows Nephi Craig, a chef from the White Mountain Apache Nation (Arizona), opening an indigenous café as a nutritional recovery clinic; Elsie Dubray, a young scientist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Nation (South Dakota), conducting landmark studies on bison; and the Ancestral Guard, a group of environmental activists from the Yurok Nation (Northern California), trying to save the Klamath river.

GATHER is a full-length documentary that is the result of a three-year collaboration between First Nations Development Institute and award-winning director Sanjay Rawal. Featuring the work of First Nation’s Nourishing Native Foods & Health program and First Nations’ grantees and partners, GATHER is a way of supporting tribes and Native communities as they build sustainable foodways that improve health, strengthen food security and increase control over Native agriculture and food systems. First Nations makes the film available to grantees and community partners to showcase the importance of Native food systems and the efforts underway to rebuild them.
